The majority of the seed collections in the Seed Bank at Wakehurst are curated by the larger Millennium Seed Bank Partnership, a seed conversation network active in over 80 countries around the world.
Currently, there are more than 92, seed collections in the bank, which represent over 40, species. In its plant division, the laboratory manages more than 10, plant species in long-term storage and on fields, orchards, and nature reserves. The mission of the Network is to nourish and assist the growing seed sovereignty movement across Turtle Island.
ISKN provides educational resources, mentorship training, outreach, and advocacy support on seed policy issues, and organizes convenings to connect communities engaged in this work. Sierra Seeds , a nonprofit sister program to ISKN, also uses mentorship and education to create greater sustainability in food and seed systems by sharing essential practical skills and promoting seed literacy.
Its seed bank holds nearly 2, varieties of crops adapted to landscapes extending from southern Colorado to Mexico.
These varieties include traditional crops such as corn, beans, and squash used by the Apache, Havasupai, Hopi, Maricopa, Mayo, and many other tribes. Navdanya , India. Navdanya is a research-based initiative founded by Dr. Vandana Shiva, a world-renowned scientist and environmentalist. The organization is a network of seed keepers and organic producers that works across 22 states in India. Navdanya has helped set up over community seed banks over the last 30 years.
The organization has conserved and promoted undervalued crops such as millets, pulses, and pseudo-cereals and saved over 4, rice varieties. They also conduct research on sustainable farming practices and have provided training to over , farmers on food and seed sovereignty.
In response to declining native plant populations due to increasing urbanization, the initiative works to maximize long-term conservation of diverse native species.
Launched with 34 endangered species, conservation efforts include collecting seeds, preparing and implementing protocols for restoration and management of native plant populations, and raising public awareness of the status of native plants in NYC.
The library works to create local seed stocks that are acclimated to desert climate and support an abundant and genetically diverse landscape. The collection helps to support gardeners and educate community members about how to grow, harvest, and save seeds. Made up of almost types of seeds, varieties include beans, flowers, herbs, melons, and more. Founded in , RMSA emphasizes sharing of seed saving knowledge to preserve and promote the use of regionally adapted crops, herbs, wildflowers, and native grass seeds.
To create a more resilient food system, the organization provides seed education resources, runs an online seed school, hosts an international seed festival, operates a regional seed vault, and more. SeedChange , Canada. It is important to know the species of squash you plant, as crossing occurs readily between varieties of the same species but is uncommon between species.
There are four main species of squash: Cucurbita argyrosperma , C. Cucurbita maxima includes hubbard, buttercup and banana squashes. Cucurbita moschata is closely related to C. Cucurbita pepo is a large group that includes zucchini, acorn, crookneck, spaghetti and Halloween pumpkins. Hand pollination may be necessary to ensure fruit set if adequate pollinators are not available or you are growing more than one variety of the same species and want to save seeds.
Male squash flowers are produced on long stems peduncle and usually appear well before female flowers. The flowers open in the early morning so it is necessary to get to them before the bees and other insects are active. Tape both male and female flowers shut. The next morning, collect the male flowers and distribute them among the females, using male flowers per female. Remove the tape and petals from the male flowers, exposing the anthers and pollen. Quickly open the female flowers without tearing the petals, brush the pollen onto the stigma of the female flower and tape shut again.
A ball of cotton gently placed on top of the pollinated stigma before being taped shut helps prevent pollen-laden insects from burrowing into the flower and crossing it. Label pollinated flowers so that you can save the seed only from those fruits.
Cantaloupes, muskmelons, honeydews and casabas all belong to the same species — Cucumis melo — and will readily cross pollinate. Watermelons also belong to a single species — Citrullus lanatus. For both, hand-pollination will help maintain genetic purity but the flowers on these vines are small and difficult to work with. Once fruit has started to set, more flowers will abort. Pollinating the very first female flowers may improve your chances of fruit set.
Follow the guidelines for squash pollinating and get out the tweezers! Though not likely to be something most home gardeners might try, we use isolation cages for our melons and watermelons and rent the services of small hives.
Bumble bees are produced in hives small enough to rotate through the 13 ft. X 30 ft. The hives are rotated through all the cages at about 1 week intervals throughout the season. Their careful housekeeping habits prevent cross-pollination between accessions from occurring.
If seed matures over a period of time, save seed from multiple harvests so that seeds from early- and late-maturing plants are included in the sample. This helps ensure that genetic diversity will be maintained in your seed sample. When the seeds rattle in their pods or have begun to fall from the plant, they are typically ready to harvest. They can be left in the field until completely dry or harvested and placed in a protected area to finish drying. These should be harvested when the fruit are slightly over-ripe but are not rotten.
For vining crops, the fruit are typically mature when the fruit are somewhat whitish on the bottom side and the tendrils on the fruit-bearing stem and two adjacent stems are dry. The fruit are typically split and the seeds are scooped out of the fruit, washed and allowed to dry on cloth towels or pillowcases out of the light and heat.
Seeds must be cleaned before they can be stored. Different crops require different techniques for cleaning. Overall, seeds should be free of plant material bits of leaf, stems, etc. Download printable instructions for cleaning dry processed seeds here. Tomato — blend clean, fully ripe fruits in a blender until all the fruits are mashed and the mixture is very thick, add some water to the mashed fruit and stir. Pour into shallow bowl, place in warm spot and allow to ferment for days.
Stir daily. A thick, white layer of mold, with bubbles, will form on top and produce a strong bad smell. If allowed to ferment too long, germination may occur. Be sure to stop the fermentation if this occurs. When fermentation is complete, scrape off mold layer. Add water to bowl, swish and pour into larger container or small bucket.
Also, take into account that packaging, even of the most modest type, also cost something to produce and hence need to be priced accordingly into the product. We would all agree that coke can probably be sold cheaper if sold in a plastic bag.
Well, bottles and cans are more pleasant but also more costly and certainly built into the price of coke too. Well, I only meant to write a short post but I got carried away.
My apologies if I have bored you to death. I thank you once again for providing the space for this free exchange of idea. I hope some of my comments have been useful to you or your readers and bloggers. I will visit your blog later on to see if anyone has offered further comments.
I do hope, and would very much appreciate it, if any responses to my posting are done gently, respectfully and in a friendly manner. I certainly have no intention to initiate a heated argument over this very subjective topic and cope any insults unnecessarily.
Best wished to you all and happy searching for that one thing that will help you achieve your goals whatever they are. Wow Milo that is a very long and involved comment.
I appreciate your views on things and I agree with the majority of them and understand how hard it is to build a small business. Milo, Thank you for spending the time to write that detailed post. I for one appreciate it and found it extremely balancing after all the positive and negative posts. I have now made my decision on which product I will purchase. I understand all the criticism.
I have been on the Latin seed for about a week and a half now…. So far no weight loss as far as I can tell anyway. I have however been very tired and had head aches and probably the worst of all side effects….. I noticed some people have experienced similar side affects did they ever get better or go away, especially the toilet issue?? I think they suggest more potassium is consumed coz potassium breaks down acids and from the nutritional guide it seems to contain alot of acids… something to ponder??
Oh and something else strange …. I kinda felt sore all over in the first week its hard to explain felt like my body was brusied all over but no actuall bruising could be seen. Anyone else had this side effect?? I have the same thing as you…lots of toilet trips and the body aching like its been bruised…. I got a scare when the muscles below my breasts felt sore to touch, but that has all passed now.
The tops of my legs are sore now…. Keep me posted on your progress. I just started to use the latin seed,,and I am fantastic,,,,,just one week and I am noticing changes in my body,,,,and my fit much better now,,,.
I also saw the latin seed for the first time on a current affair a few weeks ago and decided to give it a try. Hi Everyone Have been on the seed for one month. Skin feels softer and a little firmer then it did previously. Yes,the toilet trips are annoyint, but I suppose one has to get rid of all the rubbish that is stored inside and for so long too.
I have gone down a size and am still losing. I was a puffy size 16 and this was pushing it. I do not crave sugary or fatty foods anymore and the smell of fried foods is ughly.
I am choosing healthier foods now and I feel so much happier and healthier. The most important thing is that I do not feel FAT and all the bloating is not there.
I will stay on this product as I am happy with the results. The cost is nothing, for all those that complain would always complain about something. This has been the easiest thing that I have ever taken or used. My life is still my own and I can eat whatever I want. For now I like healthy food and I do not eat large amounts nor eat all day. Stress does not bother me like it use to and my life has improved so very much.
My weekend do not consist of a pantry full of chocolates and lollies. My fridge does not have 3 different cakes in it from the Cheesecake shop. I use to eat 1 cheesecake every 2 days.
I use to have I packet of potatoe chips and 6 blocks of chocolates in the cupboard. After 2 weeks on the seed I was down to 1 cheesecake a week and 3 chocolates in the cupboard.
Now I am down to 3 chocolates in the cupboard. And for all those that doubt or complain, well,no doubt you will still be complaining this time next year about something else.
HI Interesting read. I like others I suspect , would be interested to see a photo comparasson of the different nuts. If it can be grown in Brisbane, what is the name of the tree. Maybe we should all plant one and just make sure we treat the tree nice and dont spray it.
Sounds like One tree would be plenty! Thanks Nettie. Hi Jules again Well, there have been no more cheesecakes in the house or me. I do not enjoy chocolate when I eat it and had the taste of potatoe chips now. So far out of 3 packets I have bought they have ended up in the bin. As for hot chips, just the thought of all that grease is enough to put me off.
I have tried so many ways to loose weight before and nothing, nothing compares with this Latin Seed. This must mean less time for it to get toxic in the body and less time to block ones system and create more cellulite FAT. I am happy to be fitting into a size 14 at the moment.
I am so greatful that I do not feel like a bloated toad. And this is only the beginning. My arms are so much less FAT and dimpled looking and you know!!!!! Just day to day stuff and work. My body is slowly getting into shape and as far as I am concerned it is happening in a natural way. My 18 year old daughter is also taking the Latin Seed and for the past 6years, due to emotional dramas has had her adrenial glands block up in the lower part of her body eg: from knees down to feet.
No ankles!! Her legs got fatter too,so imagine how horrible she has felt and just think of all the crap that she went through at school, with all those rotten kids that always have to bully.
As my body is changing for the better,I thought,I wonder how my daughter is going. Sometimes it is difficult to notice these things when you live together. I was trying to catch a glimse of her ankles as this being a sensitive area of her body to talk about and as I looked I could see a remarkable differance in them. I told her that I could see a bit differance in them and that I could actuall see her ankle bone.
To all of those that have such an empty life and have the need to always put things down. Why do you always have to try and put your unhappiness onto other people. We are all individual people and can do what the heck we choose to do. At least we who are taking the Latin Seed and getting results. We want to make a Better change within ourselves.
I actually know plenty of people that have tried it including myself. I love it. As for my friends they hooked me onto this , swear by it. It is quite obvious that you are the owners of the company and as I have mentioned before, I have evidence to prove that you are posing as different people and it is not doing your business any good at all. It is easy to see through your facade, particularly from my end where I can tell who is who. I hope that everyone who reads this takes note of this low act.
Let me state for the millionth time. I am not a doctor, I do not care if the product works or not, All this blog is about is marketing…. I have personally used the latin seed and did have side effects. However my stomach started to shrink which was great and i was losing weight. I have read where certain herbs have a better potency from certain regions e. But the TGA in Australia is very strict with natural supplements so I have a huge doubt that it would be poisonous. Before purchasing their product ask them to provide documented evidence of the safe testing, the approvals, the long term efficacy including all potential side effects.
This leaves them open to legal proceedings if someone has a stroke, a heart attack and dies. I started at 63 kgs and am now sitting happily at 57kgs…. My thighs and arms feel tighter…. My stomach is flatter than its been since I had my son 5 years ago…I am one very very happy customer!
I will be staying on this baby for a while. Also, random, but my fingernails are heaps stronger than they have been before! The toilet trips never seemed to ease but now its just a simple as soon as I get up thing…. Feel so much less bloated and its great to be regular finally!
I should also note that I have noticed my appetite being suppressed but otherwise I have not changed my diet dramatically. Hi, Just reading through the comments. I started on the latin seed probably about weeks ago.
Instead of losing weight, I have gained about 3 kgs. I find this weird considering I have intentionally tried to stop eating the same amount of junk food as I normally do. Appetite seems to be the same. Nothing feels different at all. All i wanted to do was lose 4 kg. Now, i need to lose double it.
I do not know whether it is due to the seed or not. However, I will finish off the packet and will let you know whether it works or not. Hopefully it does. Otherwise, I am worse off than when i first started! My mum came across it first, using it to shed some kilos, she noticed a change in size instantly.
Why not give it ago? With any product you get, you will never know until you try it. Ive been taking the Latin seed for 1 week, i feel nauseous, i have pains in my body, and my face is aching, can someone tell me if this is normal? I regularly visit and see this blog, to see how others are doing with the seed, i posted first on 18th May here, you can read my posts.
I didnt changed any diet, but, i think due to this product I dont feel that much hunger. I am not very active so I donot do any exercises, just normal home tasks, like cooking dishwashing etc. I am so glad, but the only thing now i am concerned is that I am also loosing my breasts which I donot like…. I have been on the Latin seed for over a month and i have had no results.
I will not be buying the product again and i will just stick to my running and diet, changing them until i find something that works for my body. Hi, I posted here a month ago. From what other users have said.. I tried it, its the biggest scam ever!!! Dont waste your money!!! I was tired in the beginning too, you just need to make sure you stick to a decent diet. They told me I needed at least a banana a day. I started the latin seed last sunday, im super sore, very tired, but my friends friend swears by it if you can just get thru the first few weeks- apparently her mother took it for over a year and is super slim and ate what ever she wantd, so my idea is to eat right, exersise and ill be half the time..
I have been on the Latin Seed for 9 days now, for the first few days it flushed me out alot of toilet trips i was tired and i had belly cramps but now i am feeling fine, i try to eat yohurt and a banana everyday. I dont weigh or measure myself so im just going to go off my body changes and how my clothes fit, its only been 9 days so i will repost again in a few mths. As with my diet i feel i am less hungry but i will not deprive my body, if i feel like chocolate i will have chocolate!
Exercise well Meh! I am keeping up with the water and find i go for water more now instead of pepsi max, coke zero. I take a quarter of the seed crushed in a cup of hot water, i wait for 5 mins before i drink. I have heard and read alot about this seed and its getting very popular, so im giving it a try to see how i go A subsequent report will provide a diagnosis of the problem as well as some possible policy interventions to address it.
Title: "Music for U. This project integrates music education and international affairs through a classical musician exchange program between Georgetown and the Lyceum Mozartiano de la Habana.
It will utilize a cultural immersion approach to highlight shared history, traditions, and values between the United States and Cuba, including tours of Washington, D.
The Music Program of the Department of Performing Arts and the Center for Latin American Studies will collaborate to facilitate intercultural research and collaboration workshops and a seminar on U. Georgetown will send 12 student musicians and two faculty to Havana and host 10 Cuban student musicians here in Washington, D.
Each visit will culminate in a classical musical concert open to the general public without admission cost. Institutions form the infrastructure of governance. They guide the direction and pace of political change and undergird and facilitate economic development. Yet despite their undeniable importance, there is no easily accessible source for systematic, aggregated information about the functioning, development, and durability of the political-legal infrastructure of the countries of the Americas.
This project will continue building the Georgetown University Politics and Rule of Law in the Americas GU-PRoLA , a database that will store and disseminate current and historical information on politics and the rule of law in 22 countries in the western hemisphere, for use by policymakers, civil society, and scholars of the Americas.
As a signature initiative of the Center for Latin American Studies, the GU-PRoLA has significant potential to become the authoritative, internationally recognized resource of record for data on governance in the Americas. Over the last generation, Bus Rapid Transit BRT has become the public transportation solution of choice in Latin American urban planning and will remain so for at least the next generation.
Offering the promise of low-cost urban mobility to passengers ranging from the working poor to the emerging middle class, BRT has often seemed like the ideal mode of transportation to respond to shifts toward democratization, neoliberalism, and inclusion in Latin America. Given its prominence, it is vitally important to investigate why BRT succeeds in some cases and fails in others, and why even successful cases have proven vulnerable.
Researchers will craft papers that explore the relationship between BRT and rights to the Latin American city. It has not been a good year for global trade.
