Fluorine is the most electronegative element, and francium is the least. The electron configuration is how the electrons are organized into sub-shells. A more in-depth explanation is beyond the scope of this page, but the electron configuration is strongly linked to the properties of the element.
Oxidation states are the ionic states where the atom is stable. Using iron as an example, iron will commonly lose either two or three electrons, but it is stable losing up to six electrons, or gaining up to two electrons. In this video, you will learn about how the periodic table is organized. You will also see some trends among certain groups like the alkali metals , the halogens , and the noble gases.
Throughout the table, we can observe many traits like metallic character , atomic radius size , differences in ionization energy , and changes in electronegativity. The periodic table is organized based on the amount of electrons a neutral atom of each element has. This is the same as the number of protons in that atom. This value is called the atomic number and is listed above each element on the periodic table. Even though protons define the identity of an element, the number of electrons determines the reactivity of each element, allowing the periodic table to sort elements by similar properties.
Electrons are found in different spaces around an atom , which we call electron shells. Each row of the Periodic Table of Elements, called a period , represents a new outer shell of electrons. The elements in each column, called a group , have the same amount of electrons in their outer shell, causing them to have similar properties.
These predictable properties are so important that they were what allowed Mendeleev to come up with the modern periodic table in the first place! Every element has a unique combination of period and group, and a unique atomic number. Chemistry Periodic Table.

Related Lessons. Many new elements have been discovered, while others have been artificially synthesized. Each fits properly into a group of elements with similar properties. The periodic table is an arrangement of the elements in order of their atomic numbers so that elements with similar properties appear in the same vertical column or group.
The figure below shows the most commonly used form of the periodic table. Each square shows the chemical symbol of the element along with its name. Notice that several of the symbols seem to be unrelated to the name of the element: Fe for iron, Pb for lead, etc.
Most of these are the elements that have been known since ancient times and have symbols based on their Latin names. The atomic number of each element is written above the symbol. A period is a horizontal row of the periodic table. There are seven periods in the periodic table, with each one beginning at the far left. Closed Population And Exponential Model What is the relationship between intrinsic rate of increase and body weight The relationship between an intrinsic rate of increase and body weight is calcula Osmium Research Paper Osmium also has neutrons.
Shuffle Toggle On. Card Range To Study through. What do the columns represent in the periodic table? Columns of elements are called groups. What number group they are in correspond to how many electrons they have in their outer shell.
What group is column 1? Alkali metals. What group is column 2? Alkaline earth metals. What group is column 8? Inert and Noble Gases. For example, every element in the top row the first period has one orbital for its electrons. All of the elements in the second row the second period have two orbitals for their electrons.
As you move down the table, every row adds an orbital. At this time, there is a maximum of seven electron orbitals. The periodic table also has a special name for its vertical columns. Each column is called a group. The elements in each group have the same number of electrons in the outer orbital. Those outer electrons are also called valence electrons. They are the electrons involved in chemical bonds with other elements.
Every element in the first column group one has one electron in its outer shell. Every element in the second column group two has two electrons in the outer shell.
