We discover this name of God when Moses builds an altar to the Lord at a place called Rephidim. This is quite an awesome story when you consider the people that were involved in this battle.
The people of Israel had escaped from Egypt. Their leader was Moses and their General involved in leading these men into battle was called Joshua. It was as a transient tribe of herdsmen. They were trespassers travelling through the lands of fierce fighting peoples. They travelled with women, children, herds, and all their possessions. You would definitely say that they were not ' battle-ready ' or equipped for the job.
But they were equipped with something else that no other nation on earth had — a pillar of fire, a cloud of smoke, the very presence of God. Israel did not fight its battles alone. No matter how unequipped or ready for battle, the people of Israel were they had their very own supernatural weapon.
This weapon is available to you and me today too when we call on it. When the people of Israel called on the name of God, Yahweh Nissi, they called out to God who is powerful enough to overcome any foe. Let's see what scripture says about this battle:. While the people of Israel were still at Rephidim, the warriors of Amalek attacked them.
Tomorrow, I will stand at the top of the hill, holding the staff of God in my hand. Meanwhile, Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of a nearby hill. But whenever he dropped his hand, the Amalekites gained the advantage. So Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side of Moses, holding up his hands. So his hands held steady until sunset.
What a story! It was a day to remember, for it was the day God first showed Israel as a nation that He fought for them, that He led them into battle, that He protected and conquered on their behalf, and that He was their banner. This is a name of God that we need to remember too. Moses knew this and wanted to make certain the Israelites knew it and remembered it. Nothing that he or they did in the physical realm brought about victory.
Throughout life, we will face many battles. Some big and some small. Financial strains, health problems, addiction, abuse, relationship problems, stress at work, marital difficulties, wayward children. Some are familiar to you, some not. Is the battle you are in one that the Lord has chosen for you? Scripture is very clear in this last passage that the Lord, in fact, chooses certain battles for us to fight. Does He lead the way as Jehovah Nissi in your current battles?
Perhaps the battle you are in is a battle that you have chosen, one that is outside the will of God? Are you fighting in your own strength? Are you struggling to be victorious in the battle? If Jehovah Nissi is leading the way in your struggle, then you are assured success, but if you are fighting your battle in your own strength, your defeat is imminent.
Where in your life do need God to show Himself strong as Jehovah Nissi — the Lord my Banner — and go before you so that you may know victory? Although the name Jehovah Nissi occurs just once in the bible and that is in the new testament, Isaiah, also predicting the coming of the Messiah, wrote:.
As believers, we understand that Jesus is our banner. We belong to Him and identify ourselves by His name. From Ephesians , what are the weapons God supplies in order for us to fight a spiritual battle? Which of these are offensive weapons? Defensive weapons? When have these weapons helped you? How can you use them for someone else? As a football fan, my husband has a Kansas City Chiefs banner hanging in our media room. As proud Americans, we display the American flag on a flagpole out on our property.
We create and hang banners to celebrate events or people. Do you attend church on Sunday, yet cuss like a sailor and wear revealing clothes? Do you read your Bible at home, but spend your weekends at the bar? What banner are your words and behaviors displaying to those around you? Those who you can reach for the Kingdom of God? Banners mark places and honor people, but they also serve as a name badge.
Surrender Fight my Battles. What a great reminder that God,Jehovah Nissi, fights our battles! Praying the names of God is a meaningful way to praise Him for all of His attributes. Below is a sample Jehovah Nissi prayer.
Adapt it to your own situation, but know that God hears our prayers! When Israel faced the Amalekites, they were former slaves in Egypt, not experienced soldiers. But God fought for them, and they were victorious. We may feel inadequate, but we do not fight alone, and God promises victory.
God expects us to cooperate with Him as He works on our behalf. Israel was victorious as long as Moses held the rod of God aloft. We can depend on God for victory, but we must do our part. We can help others to gain the victories God wants for them. When Moses could hold up his hands no longer, Aaron and Hur stood by his side to hold them up for him.
Lord, help me to recognize the spiritual warfare around me and to be aware of the enemies battle tactics. Give me the strength to fight while flying your banner over it all to claim victory. You are my Jehovah Nissi and I thank you for the brothers and sisters in Christ who will raise your banner with me.
This victory belongs to you and we lift your name high in the face of both physical and spiritual attacks from satan. You have sovereign authority in all.
