His natural talent in the ring began to draw attention, and soon crowds gathered to watch Sugar Ray perform. After winning the New York Golden Gloves championship in , year-old Sugar Ray turned pro and never looked back. By , Sugar Ray was the world welterweight champion.
His reign included a 91 fight winning-streak. He held the title for five years, and then moved onto acquiring the world middleweight title, which he held five times between In The Ring magazine placed Robinson No. Outside of the ring, Robinson relished his celebrity, parading around Harlem with a pink Cadillac and making appearances at his high-profile Harlem nightclub.

Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier when he became the first Black athlete to play Major League Baseball after joining the Brooklyn Dodgers in The rematch took place on February 5th, , at Olympia Stadium in Detroit. The eighth round was historic. Robinson was saved by the bell at the count of nine. LaMotta, who was already leading on the scorecards before knocking Robinson out of the ring, pummeled and outpointed him for the rest of the fight.
LaMotta won via unanimous decision, giving Robinson the first defeat of his career. The victory was short-lived, as the two met again just three weeks later in Detroit once again. Robinson was knocked down for a nine-count count in the seventh round, but won the close fight by unanimous decision, utilizing a dazzling left jab and jarring uppercuts.
