The Reserve trail system is very enjoyable and fun to explore. Click or tap here for a more detailed trail map and further information. Haverford College has re-opened its campus, including its Nature Walk, to visitors under a revised access policy. The serene two mile Nature Walk loop a mix of gravel, dirt, woodchip and grass surfaces is popular with hikers, joggers and leashed dogs. Bikes are not allowed on the Nature Walk, but may be used on the extensive campus walkway and road system.
At the northern edge of the campus, near where College Avenue meets Rairoad Avenue, you can walk across the pedestrian bridge over the road to access the quiet Meeting House Walk. To see a more detailed map click or tap here. There are three basic segments of trail along Darby Creek all shown in orange , each about one mile long.
At this time, they are not connected to each other. The trail allows dogs if leashed but no bikes; the path is at times too narrow and rugged to accommodate both bikers and walkers. The trails are spread over the campus, which is roughly two hundred acres in size.
It is available weekends and weekdays and parking is placed so that if there are parts of the paths you want to do and others you do not, you can position your car accordingly. This loop is ideal for walking or running, with or without a dog, and bikers are not an issue, as they are not allowed. Despite this designation, you are never far from civilization and there is no possibility to become lost as long as one continues walking.
The loop is a thirty-minute undertaking longer if walked and if something shorter is desired, there are other combinations that can be exploited. It is completely flat and is a good place to walk a dog or simply spend a few minutes walking around. This area of the trail becomes busy during the weekend, a fact to be wary of.
Other Attractions The Duck Pond and surrounding flat fields are pleasant for bird watching and to use for recreational athletics. During the academic year, such use is only allowed if Haverford College students are not using the fields; if they are or are about to users must vacate.
There is also cricket played on fields not too far from the Duck Pond. The sport is played during the academic year and there are benches located from which one can watch. Uses for Haverford The trail is used currently by the Cross-Country teams for races and practice, for which it is ideal. As far as classes are concerned, the pond and nearby forests are good areas for Lower and Middle school science classes to visit as a brief field trip, whether for looking at plants, birds or the general ecosystems.
Art classes of all levels can use the landscapes and natural beauty to their advantage. Information, events, and activities from the College Arboretum, sent occasionally.
