If a game is to fall under this title, then you should take the opportunity to play such a piece of work and respect it for what it is. Haven't finished Xenogears yet, but it's definitely up there as one of the greatest RPGs ever made--easily. Not only is the story superb, but the music as well. Gotta love whatever Yasunori Mitsuda does--his arranged album, Creid, is pretty brilliant too. Going to start Xenosaga after this, though I've been told it's not chronologically connected though they share some similarities.

User Info: Oxn I've play many RPGs, and compared to others, Xenogears storyline is really immense. It's really hard to say though, because I'm still in the middle of the game. But so far, I love it. It's quite surprising that the longest runtime of any Final Fantasy game on the PS1 isn't a title from the main series, but rather a spinoff that turned out to be one of the best games in the entire franchise. Any fan of tactical RPGs would find themselves right at home with Final Fantasy Tactics , which— while somewhat challenging— is definitely one of the best games on this list by a country mile, and one of the best in the tactical RPG genre period.
Speaking of tactical RPGs, one simply can't mention long-running titles without talking about the massive powerhouse that is Front Mission 3 , the third mainline game in a series that was previously entirely exclusive to Japan. It's a criminally overlooked title that more fans of classic RPGs, tactical games, and mechs in general should definitely sink their teeth into, provided they're willing to invest the time required to best this mammoth title.
Persona 2 is widely considered by the hardcore fanbase to be the unsung hero of the franchise, with some even going so far as to labelling it the best Persona game of all time. Confusingly serving as a direct sequel to Persona 2: Innocent Sin — nobody ever said this was an easy franchise to keep track of— Persona 2: Eternal Punishment is easily one of the longest games on the PS1, and could've topped this list had it not been for an infamous title that more than doubles its run time.
That said, any hardcore JRPG veteran would know about a title that is so ridiculously long that it takes more than hours to complete everything the game has in store for the player, and well over hours just to complete the main quest.

Going out of one's way to turn over every stone and complete every side quest will easily extend this to over one hundred hours. Similarly, Wasteland 2 is also a mammoth-sized adventure. Final Fantasy XII changed up the legendary franchise's formula , being the first single-player mainline entry to put the action in real time, though the player still has to wait for a bar to fill up before performing an action.
The bloated runtime is mostly thanks to the time spent journeying across the expansive map to reach new towns, cities, and settlements. Thankfully, the re-release allows players to speed up gameplay during these long treks on foot. This series eschews the linear nature of the prior Xeno- games.
